K2 | I Live in Hong Kong

K2

The K2 students began this month by considering the different aspects of our world and how we can care for them during our Care for All Things week. I was delighted by the efforts the students made to engage with the different ways we can care for our planet. Students cared for and then regifted their plants to loved ones, reduced, recycled and reused different materials and demonstrated love and kindness to their families, friends and pets.

Then, we took a journey across Hong Kong to discover the wonders that we can see in this exciting city. We explored the many different modes of transportation we can see and the delectable delights that we can eat.

The K2 students have been challenged with weekly spelling tests and I have been very impressed with the standard of effort put in. The children are utilising their learnt phonics skills to blend, differentiate and write increasingly difficult sounds and words. The K2 class are now confident with pronouncing and recognising the phonetic sounds we have covered so far, and we are now focusing on the formation of full sentences.

We have covered a broad range of topics in numeracy. We reviewed counting from 0 – 100 and 2-D shapes, and have moved on to learning addition and subtraction and 3-D shapes. We have also conducted weekly numeracy tests, where the students have shown great skills by writing numbers 0 – 60 and calculating basic addition and subtraction questions.

We have also been striving to stay fit and active this January! Online learning has not stopped this K2 class from getting up and moving, and we have found lots of different ways to exercise at home. We have practiced yoga, become experts at throwing and catching, learnt the skills of cricket and rounders and honed our fine and gross motor skills during hopscotch!

It has been another excellent month of virtual adventures and we are now looking forward to celebrating Chinese New Year at Mills!

K2 students began Term 2 with our Care for All Things event. Through games and storytelling, they learnt to be mindful of our animals, family, friends and the environment. They demonstrated how to show love and kindness to the others by donating old clothes and toys.

During the theme I Live in Hong Kong, students have been focusing on different local transportation and food. They learnt to make sentences like ‘my favourite more of transportation is…’ in Mandarin.

They have started to explore our new theme Children Around the World. They understood that China is a multi-national country and learnt to identify landmarks of China.

They have also been practising and performing songs for our Chinese New Year celebration.

We greatly appreciate your ongoing support during this time of online learning. We hope you are all staying happy and healthy.
